It is very common for a couple to experience a sexual problem at some point in their relationship. Physical and psychological factors can impact a person's desire and functioning throughout his or her lifetime. Following childbirth, being in menopause or andropause, or any other multitude of life's normal conditions, can cause us to lose desire and/or the ability to orgasm. As people age, and since we are living longer lives in general, we become more likely to experience changes in our bodies and in our relationships that affect our sexual functioning. Also, chronic or acute illness and medication side effects are likely to have a negative impact on our sex lives. Having a sex life that we can enjoy is an important aspect of our quality of life, and it is worth the effort to find professional help when we are no longer satisfied. |

The most current authors and experts on sexual problems value the integrative role that psychotherapy has with medical interventions. Generally speaking, people with sexual concerns should see a sex therapist in addition to their medical doctor to get the most complete treatment. Doctors rarely have the time to explore beyond the physical aspects of a person's presenting problem. Sex therapists are trained to evaluate the psychological, relational, cultural, and contextual factors that impact a couple's or an individual's sexual functioning. For most sexual problems, therapy is of a relatively brief duration. Completion of homework is crucial to the successful outcome of sex therapy. Through implementation of a variety of interventions and well-established protocols, sex therapy can help people achieve the best possible outcome. Perhaps your sex life is doing just fine, "thank you," but you would like it to be more fulfilling. However, you may be feeling like there is a potential that is not being met?
